It’s 1965, and Tulsa, Oklahoma is divided along two social lines: the working class Greasers and the wealthier South Side gang, the Socials. When young Ponyboy Curtis and his gang (the Greasers) get into trouble with rich kids (the Socs) the group of young men have no other choice but to flee. As these young people try to find themselves and each other, the sadness of sophistication begins to reach them and their battles and relationships reach a resolution: for some redemption, for others disastrous consequences. Ponyboy’s glimpse of the peaceful, bright life calling to him from beyond the hate and violence is heartbreaking, and ultimately inspiring.
The Outsiders is a dramatic and enduring work of fiction that laid the groundwork for the YA genre. S. E. Hinton was 16 years old when she penned the novel, and her classic story of a boy who finds himself on the outskirts of regular society remains as powerful today as it was the day it was first published.
